The justweb™ traffic statistical analysis for the first half of 2009 is now available.

In the months January through to June (2009), justweb™ attracted 94,005 unique visitors, compared to the same period in 2008 (January through June) in which there were 80,209 unique visitors - an increase of just over 17%.

As a result of this level of traffic, certain internet trends become apparent - such as the popularity of different types of operating systems, browsers, screen resolutions (screen size), and the countries of origin of visitors.

Summary for the first half of 2009 - justweb.com.au

Total unique visits: 94,005

Unique keywords used: 84,369 visits via 31,169 keywords.

Statistics covered in this interim (half year) report are:

Internet Explorer Browser Versions
1. 7.0 40,382 66.95%
2. 6.0 16,236 26.92%
3. 8.0 3,684 6.11%

Comments
Internet Explorer is still the most popular browser by far. However, because this will be phased out in the not too distant future (it has already been removed from European Windows 7 operating systems), no doubt IE's market share will drop considerably. Firefox continues to gain ground, and this will increase as people look for a replacement browser. Safari use has increased as well, which is of course due to the increased usage of Macs.

Also of interest is that more than a quarter of visitors still use Internet Explorer 6 version browser. Thankfully, that means about 75% of people have upgraded, and this figure will no doubt increase, pushed along by reports that sites such as YouTube and DIGG will discontinue support for version 6.

Operating systems

Operating Systems 1. Windows 86,097 91.59%
2. Macintosh 6,368 6.77%
3. Linux 899 0.96%
4. iPhone 261 0.28%
5. (not set) 141 0.15%
6. Danger Hiptop 88 0.09%
7. iPod 77 0.08%
8. SymbianOS 40 0.04%
9. FreeBSD 13 0.01%
10. Playstation3 9 0.01%

Comments
Windows is still the clear winner, and will be for the foreseeable future. Macintosh has increased its share, and a notable addition to the list is iPhone - even if it is only 0.28% of the total traffic. It is interesting to note that only around 400 visits originated from mobile device platforms such as iPhone, Danger Hiptop, iPod, Symbian, etc. That represents approximately 0.42% of the total traffic.

Browser/operating system combinations

1. Internet Explorer / Windows 60,308 64.15%
2. Firefox / Windows 22,749 24.20%
3. Safari / Macintosh 3,951 4.20%
4. Firefox / Macintosh 2,362 2.51%
5. Chrome / Windows 1,934 2.06%
6. Opera / Windows 765 0.81%
7. Firefox / Linux 565 0.60%
8. Mozilla / Linux 282 0.30%
9. Safari / iPhone 260 0.28%
10. Safari / Windows 232 0.25%

Comments
Notable here is the number of people who choose to use the standard Mac browser (Safari) over what I think to be a far better and more functional piece of software - Firefox.

Screen resolutions

Screen Resolutions 1. 1024x768 27,012 28.73%
2. 1280x800 19,103 20.32%
3. 1280x1024 16,375 17.42%
4. 1440x900 8,018 8.53%
5. 1680x1050 7,777 8.27%
6. 1920x1200 2,943 3.13%
7. 1152x864 2,446 2.60%
8. 800x600 2,109 2.24%
9. 1280x768 1,581 1.68%
10. 1280x960 1,101 1.17%
11. 1366x768 690 0.73%
12. 1280x720 620 0.66%
13. 1400x1050 541 0.58%
14. 1600x1200 516 0.55%
15. 1024x600 506 0.54%
16. 1920x1080 403 0.43%
17. 320x396 338 0.36%
18. 1360x768 270 0.29%
19. 1600x900 219 0.23%
20. 1152x720 104 0.11%

Comments
Looking at the above screen resolutions, it is clear many people use Laptops or Notebook computers. Also, even now, there are still people using the old 800x600 screen resolution - at only 2.24%, it doesn't sound like much to worry about, but that equates to a little over 2000 visitors over 6 months - that's quite a lot of people.

Java support

Java Support 1. Yes 87,974 93.58%
2. No 6,031 6.42%

Comments
Again, 6.42% of people don't appear to have Java enabled, but this represents just over 6,000 visitors. If your site relies on Java to run, or you don't have some sort of redundancy (non-Java compatibility) and you get a lot of traffic, you are missing out on a lot of potential customers.

Connection speeds

Connection Speed - ADSL2 Modem 1. Unknown 56,941
2. DSL 18,311
3. Cable 9,600
4. T1 5,959
5. Dialup 2,915
6. OC3 144
7. ISDN 135

Comments
Who says dialup is dead? Almost 3,000 visitors say "no it isn't"! And even more if some in the "Unknown" category include dialup connections. When over 60% of your visitors' connections are "unknown", it is a little hard to draw conclusions as to which is more popular - (A)DSL or Cable. But what is clear, if you have a high traffic website, thousands of people accessing your website will still be using a dialup connection.

Comments
Clearly Telstra (Big Pond) have the lion's share of the market in Australia, with Optus coming a very distant second.
