3D Television - All you need to know - but are afraid to ask

3D television provides you with a totally immersive viewing experience. It will have you ducking for cover as things seemingly fly through the air towards you, or have you reaching out to grab the life-like images in front of your eyes. Movies, sports and games will come to life with dynamic depth.

But don't worry about the lack of content because with a new 3D TV you will still have the ability to watch normal digital television as well. Units will have the capability to simply switch on and off the 3D function, however you will be required to wear special 3D TV glasses (not required for normal viewing) which will be supplied by your manufacturer, for example Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, LG, etc.

Because not all manufacturers use the same technology, 3D TV glasses are specially matched to the type of 3D technology used by the manufacturer of your particular digital television set.

2D to 3D conversion works with a combination of hardware and software. 3D TVs are able to convert the 2D content in real time, and that in turn is translated by the glasses as a 3D image. You can also watch 3D broadcast in 2D if the need arises because most 3D TVs have the ability to convert 3D content back into 2D. This may be useful in situations where you can't locate your 3D glasses or there are not enough 3D glasses for everyone watching the show etc.

Current TV's and DVD or Blu-ray Players will not be able to play 3D content, however, using the 2D to 3D convertor on your 3D TV, you will be able to convert standard 2D Blu-ray or normal DVD discs into 3D. In order to play native 3D Blu-ray discs, you will require a 3D Blu-ray player that features HDMI version 1.4.


If you own a gaming console, such as a Sony Playstation 3, you will I be able to play 3D content on it and, with the 2D to 3D conversion available in most 3D TVs, you will be able to convert your current games and play them real- time in 3D. Many of the gaming studios are also releasing, or at least developing, native 3D games. Note: your gaming console MUST be connected to the TV by HDMI in order to use native 3D games.

3D content is growing at a rapid rate. All major movie studios are committed to producing native 3D movies and through the course of the year (2010) there will be a major boom in available 3D content. A number of the major broadcasters are also looking at transmitting shows in 3D.

The 3D future awaits us - well actually, it's here now!

To see an example of a 3D television show, please check out this short clip of the Aussie hit, "Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation" in 3D - but you'll need a pair of blue/red (cyan/magenta) 3D glasses. Please note that the 3D glasses supplied by TV manufacturers will not be the same as the ones you may be used to - more like the ones supplied to see movies such as "Avatar".
