Smartglass - for privacy, advertising, UV protection and more!

Have you ever watched those TV shows where (e.g.) the senior law firm partner steps into his/her office, flicks a switch, and the floor to ceiling glass office wall simply turns opaque? Pretty darn smart, eh? In fact, that's what it’s called - smartglass.

Smartglass, otherwise referred to as privacy glass or switchable glass, is simply an evolution of tried and tested laminated glass applications in which it utilises the development of a Liquid Crystal Film.

But smart glass isn't just for office walls. The new liquid crystal switchable glass can change appearance, allowing any transition between clear and opaque, virtually in milliseconds.

It can be used in internal glass wall partitions in offices and corporate board rooms, in shopfronts and display windows, in hotel lobbies and foyers. Anywhere in which an alternate view or privacy is required. It can even be used as a projection flat screen for presentations and movies.

This product is simply amazing. It can go from clear to opaque, transparent to translucent. It can regulate daylight transmission, and with projection it becomes a massive flat-screen with remarkable image clarity - all at the flick of a switch.

In its un-switched state, the liquid crystals diffuse light, rendering the glass opaque. When switched, the liquid crystals align, allowing light to transmit without diffusion. Also, by variable voltage control, any state from clear to opaque can be programmed. It also allows you to do without curtains and blinds.

Switchable glass would be brilliant in a storefront application. For example, at night your whole shop front window can become a giant flat-screen on which you could display your own tailor-made advertising features projected from inside your shop.

There are many more uses, but some of the features are:

• Allows architects and contractors engineering flexibility
• Can be supplied in curved, odd shaped, notched or hole-punched panels to accommodate specific display applications
• It can have high-impact-resistant safety glass incorporated in its manufacture
• It is available in extra-large size panels (up to 1820mm x 3500mm)
• By adding in-line sensors and switches the glass panel can be made to alternate between clear and opaque in time to music or movement
• With the use of a control device (like a dimmer switch) any degree of opacity in-between can be achieved
• In its default opaque state switchable glass makes a superb high resolution, internal or external, rear-projection screen
• It has exceptional optical quality with excellent light transmission
• Switchglass permits no distraction of shutters, blinds or drapes
• Provides 99% UV blockage
• Uses minimal energy with a low working voltage
