They write with flair, making it easy for people to be drawn into what they are saying about your business, services or products. As a motorcycle rider, you may have some idea of what it would be like to have leprosy because that's how insurance companies tend to treat riders want to quote motorcycle insurance.

They don't salivate over you for your business like they would if you were asking for car insurance. And yes, you probably know why - riding a motorcycle is more of a risk than driving a car. Of course it's true that a motorcycle doesn't offer the same protection as a car, but most motorcycle riders are not stupid; they understand the risks and manage them responsibly. 'Tell that to the insurance companies,' you say.

Well, as it turns out, someone must have told the insurance companies because the choice in motorcycle insurance is on the rise and the financial penalties for riding a motorcycle are decreasing as more competitors targeting motorcycle riders enter the market.

At long last you can expect a good deal on your motorcycle insurance without someone looking at you as if you farted in an elevator.

Please read the disclaimer at the bottom of this page. As with any purchase, please do your own research.

Motorcycle Insurance Providers

Since motorcycles are not the same as cars, you want an insurer who understands the insurance needs of a motorcycle enthusiast. While some of the bigger insurers provide motorcycle insurance, it's important to note that their main business is providing car insurance, and therefore you may not get the detail of service that you would with a specialised insurer.

General Insurance Code of Practice

It's also worth considering insuring your motorcycle with an insurance provider that is a General Insurance Code of Practice Participant. This means that if ever there is a dispute between you and your insurance provider, the Insurance Ombudsman Service can enforce an independent ruling. If you insure your motorcycle with an insurer that is not a General Insurance Code of Practice Participant, the Insurance Ombudsman Service will assist in mediating the matter but has no power to enforce a ruling.

To check if your insurance provider is on the list of General Insurance Code of Practice Participants visit the Insurance Ombudsman Service website at www.insuranceombudsman.com.au. Make sure you look for the insurance company that underwrites your policy, not your insurance provider.

If the underwriter is on the list of Code of Practice Participants then your insurance provider is bound by their terms of reference.
At this point, I should mention the insurance companies I use. For comprehensive insurance I use Shannons. Ever since I bought my first Harley in 1986, I have used them exclusively. Their service is second to none, and their rates are simply unbeatable. As for CTP Greenslips, I use NRMA. Again, very competitive pricing, and driver at fault cover is included - but not on motorcycle Greenslip policies (unfortunately, the risk is too high).
