Recently, I've been thinking of moving. However, when one wakes up to the sound of the Aussie bush, whilst being situated in suburbia, it's very enticing to stay put.

Take for example this morning. It was a little foggy, but once the fog cleared, the magpie calls (and other assorted bird calls) sang out across the trees. It sort of reminded me of a media frenzy - lots of news to be distributed, lots of gossip to be shared. Much more relaxing and soothing than a human media swarm I have to say!

Who knows what they are "saying" in the video below, but I love the sound of the bush, especially magpie calls. Have a listen to my Aussie back yard.

Magpie calls

I had a "pet" magpie when I was teenager living on a country property in NSW. Imaginatively, I called him "Bird". He was abandoned by his parents and I found him in one of our paddocks just hopping around - unable (or unwilling) to fly. He was a very smart bird, and very entertaining. Once he started to fly, he would return to my hand once I called "here Bird", or it was time for his favourite meal of minced meat.

Bird the magpie loved it when my father was welding. It became a game with him. He'd jump up on my father's knee and wait for him to relight the oxy-acetylene torch with a match. My father would deliberately discard the match in the dirt, Bird would hop down, grab the match in his beak, then proceed to strike the match on the ground until the black head was broken off. Satisfied the match was "dead", he would then hop back onto my father's knee and wait patiently for the next match.

One day, Bird flew off and was never seen again. I hope he found a mate and lived a long and happy life in the Australian bush.
