Traffic Lawyer, Peter Proctor, Principal of Proctor & Associates, uses the DOD GSE550 GPS logger and car dash camera recorder.

There are a lot of different products on the market. The DOD GSE550 is probably top of the range available on the market. It records very clear daytime images, gives your latitude and longitude, the speed you are travelling and date and time.
"I don't drive anywhere without it" says Peter. "It has become part of my car accessories."

Features of the DOD GSE550 car black box camera

High-definition video recording (H.264 + 1080P)
GSE550 High Definition In Car Video Camcorder is equipped with high-resolution (1920x1080 @ 30fps) video recording feature, and uses the most advanced H.264 video compression technology to provide much longer recording time.

GPS Logger
GSE550 receives GPS signals and records the time, date, speed and GPS location at the same time. Through the software, the video and the Google Earth map can be played at the same time, and all your routes will be displayed on the map - a great feature if you are a fleet manager (for example).

Impact data protection
When an impact occurs, emergency brake applied, or the car is tilted, the GS550 will protect the video files automatically. Through this function the important files won't be removed by loop recording, and the device will automatically protect the earliest and latest 3 files so they can't be deleted.

Note: By pressing the save button, you can also set the present video to be protected manually.

Wide Angle Lens 120°
The standard wide, 120 degree lens, covers a large viewing angle, and provides a depth of field to show as much as possible. With this ultra wide lens, the camera enables you to shoot what could be termed a panoramic view of your travel or surroundings.

Note: The wide-angle 120° is available in the 1280 x 720 resolution only. This is still termed "HD".

High-definition video and audio transmission by HDMI interface
Built-in High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) can provide data transfer bandwidth up to 5Gbps, and can transmit audio signals without compression, along with HD video signals. HDMI technology not only provides a clear picture, but also greatly simplifies home theatre system installation due to the audio/video transmission in the same cable. Through this interface, the in car GPS camera will send a better picture and audio signal, allowing much better detail to be displayed.

1.5-inch TFT LCD screen
1.5-inch TFT screen with LED backlight allows for higher image clarity, contrast and colour settings so that you can play your recordings back using the unit itself.

Support up to 32GB SDHC memory card
The SDHC memory card is small in size, and one of the most commonly used SD cards for consumer electronics. The GSE550 supports all major brands of SD cards, and allows for expansion up to 32GB capacity.

4 x digital zoom in/out function
When you are recording or photographing at the same time, you can easily adjust the screen zoom, with the maximum being up to 4 x digital zoom in, to capture the most important images close up.

Note: Cannot use the digital zoom function for video resolution when in 1920x1080 mode.

12 Mega pixels portable camera feature
GSE550 has the ability to take 12 megapixel still images. The colour is clear and sharp, and at this resolution, you can print images up to about 50cm x 37.5cm (20" x 15").

Cycle Recording
When the storage space is full, the unit can automatically record over earlier segments so you don't stop recording. If your travel has been uneventful, this is a very handy feature that saves you having to swap memory cards, or erasing videos and/or photos.

Sound Recording On/Off
When you are in conversation and do not want to record voice at the same time, you can select to turn off the sound recording, whilst still recording video.

Start and record automatically function
After you start your car, the GSE550 will record automatically and search for the GPS signal. After the car been turned off for about 5 seconds, it will save the recorded file to is memory card and shut down automatically.
