It seems that the ever popular GoPro HD sports action camera will soon have some new competition.

JVC, after years of manufacturing quality video camera equipment, has now decided to step into the sports camera market with their GC-XA1 Sports Action Camera, given the name "ADIXXION", which is due for release in Australia around mid August.

The JVC camera, which is both waterproof and dust proof, weighs in at only 126g. Actually, they refer to it as "Quad-proof" - that is, waterproof (to 5 metres or 16.4 feet), dustproof, shockproof (from a fall of about 2 metres), and freeze proof (-10°c). So, out of the box, you get four levels of protection which should satisfy most users.

The unit itself looks remarkably like the DriftHD camera, but easier to use. I've never liked my Drift HD much because the video quality was rubbish, although they have improved it lately with some firmware updates.

Hopefully the ADIXXION brings to the table all the years of experience JVC has in providing users with quality HD video and audio.

The thing I liked about the Drift HD, is what I like (so far) with the GC-XA1 - that is, out of the box, it has a protective casing with a 1.5" LCD screen, and is low profile.

Looking at the specs though, I see it has a 5x digital zoom. Unless they've worked some magic, that may well end up being a total waste of time. Digital zooms are nigh on useless!

Recording modes are stated at:

There are a couple of features I like about the new ADIXXION. It comes with not one, but two standard 1/4" mounting holes so it will fit any tripod or universal mount. It also comes with Wi-Fi, so the video signal can be transmitted wirelessly to your smartphone to allow you to frame your shot perfectly. Great if you want to mount it to (eg) the bumper of your car, your helmet, or whatever. You can also control the camera using Wi-Fi.

In summary, the camera looks great, comes from a really good pedigree (JVC), and has a lot of fantastic features.

Will it be a GoPro "killer"? Only time will tell. It should retail in Australia for about $429.00. Stay tuned for more news, and some example video footage.
