You might be asking yourself "what is a local business marketing consultant?" - and you'd be right to do so.

I'll tell you what a local business marketing consultant is - it's simply an example of a Long Tail keyword phrase which generates very little traffic by itself. There are many examples of these types of keyword phrases, and we often see companies trying to capitalise on their Long Tail successes, claiming they achieve great results in Google using obscure keywords, purportedly searched for many times per week. In fact, often they are not searched very much at all, are easy to target, BUT can look impressive to anyone who may not know any better.

Local Business Marketing Consultant Don't get me wrong - Long Tail keyword phrases DO have their place and are VERY important, but individually generate very little traffic (ergo the term "Long Tail").

For example, in the previous monthly period (up to 02 March 2011), justweb® received traffic from over 10,500 keywords, with a little over 30% coming from just 8% of the keywords, leaving the remaining 92% of keywords to generate 70% of traffic. In other words, Long Tail searches.

My suggestion to individuals and businesses looking for SEO services is to question companies vying for your search engine optimisation work about what SHORT TAIL keyword phrases they appear for in Google. And of course, they should also be able to define what Short Tail (and Long Tail) actually means.

An example of a Short Tail phrase in justweb® is "SEO Australia", with about 50 million competing pages (as of 02 March), and thousands of searches per month.

Two examples of a justweb® Long Tail phrase are "how to use twitter effectively for customer service", and "best publicity". You can see where justweb® appears for these phrases by doing a search yourself - if you're bored.

However, someone may be able to say (for example) "Hey - we're #1 for 'SEO awards' in a Google search. If we can get a result like that, we deserve your business."

Long Tail keyword Sounds good eh? So do the search, and sure enough out of over 20 million results you may see that company. Looks impressive doesn't it? Until you discover few people search for that keyword phrase, as opposed to the Short Tail search, "SEO Australia". By the way, "SEO awards" is an example of a justweb® Long Tail phrase in case you haven't guessed.

So, if an SEO service provider says to you "we are on page one in Google for 'local business marketing consultant' - we can get you onto page one in Google too.", my suggestion would be to ask them why Google says:
"Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings..."
NOBODY can guarantee a result In Google. If an SEO promises you a particular position, look for a provider who is both credible and can offer some REAL Short Tail keyword success examples.
