I came across a website last week called Bamboo Planet whilst looking for Egyptian cotton sheets. Unbeknownst to me, you can actually buy bed linen made from - you guessed it - bamboo!

My immediate thought was that's taking it a bit too far on the eco-friendly side of things, but after reading through this neat, tidy and well laid out website, I found that bamboo sheets have some rather interesting properties.

For example, did you know that a set of 200 thread count bamboo sheets has about the equivalent comfort level to 1500 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets?

Bamboo Sheets Now, about this product being "eco-friendly": these sheets are naturally organic and the bamboo used in the manufacturing process is grown without using any pesticides or fertilizers. Not only that, but if you want to consider climate change and the carbon economy, bamboo plantations absorb about 35% more carbon than other types of trees - apparently. Bamboo is sustainable as well, and can grow up to a meter per day.

Oh, and if you are worried that using bamboo for bed sheeting is taking away from the habitat of Panda Bears, it's not - Pandas eat an entirely different type of bamboo.

With regards to comfort level and hygiene, not only is bamboo hypo allergenic and anti-bacterial*, but it is also thermo-regulating, resulting in a cool feeling in the Summer months, and a warmer feel in the Winter months. Works for me!

Bamboo towels

Bamboo Towels Bamboo Planet doesn't just sell sheets either I found out. They do a range of bath towels in some great colours (Mocca, Burnt Orange, Zesty Green and Gun Metal). As previously mentioned, bamboo is anti-bacterial AND hypo allergenic, its seems this is the perfect fibre to make towels from.

But wait - there's more. Bamboo apparently absorbs THREE TIMES it's weight and up to 60% more water than cotton, making it the perfect choice for linen and bath towels.

In summary, if you want to do you bit to help the planet, plus help make your bedroom and bathroom be more comfortable and safe, there really seems to be only one choice!

Bamboo Planet is a wholly owned Australian business based in Queensland.

*Anti-bacterial information
An antibacterial capability test was performed by the China Industrial Testing Center. 100% Bamboo fabric was tested during a 24-hour incubation period with bacterial strain type Staphylococcus Aureous. After the 24-hour period the numbers of live bacteria were counted in each sample. The results showed that 100% bamboo fabric exhibits 99.8% antibacterial kill rate. The antibacterial properties aid in the reduction of bacteria that thrive on the skin and cause unpleasant odours, so bamboo linen remains fresher for longer.
