Finding a good Sydney tax accountant is like finding a good doctor, dentist or motor mechanic - or lawyer for that matter.

They're hard to find, but when you do eventually find a good one, they're worth gold.

A qualified and experienced accountant will ensure you claim everything you are entitled to at tax time. There are deductions your tax accountant will think of that you have. Items such as cleaning expenses for your office, furniture depreciation, depreciation of your computer(s), and even "bonuses" for small businesses like the Entrepreneurs Bonus.

Not only that, they will help to keep you on the "straight and narrow" so you don't claim anything you are not entitled to. The tax office doesn't seem to like that sort of thing and may impose harsh penalties if you try make claims you are not entitled to.

A good example of how a tax accountant can help you is explaining the new investment incentive scheme.

Did you know that up until December 2009, if you have a capital expenditure, you can claim a whopping 50% of the purchase - and still claim the depreciation each year?

Lets say you buy a new laptop computer valued at $3000.00 before December 2009. Not only can you depreciate the value over a period of about 2 1/2 years, but you can claim $1500 on top of that immediately* in your tax return.

The rewards are even bigger if you purchase a new motor vehicle**.

Lets say you buy a new Holden Commodore for $30,000. You can still depreciate the car at about 18 1/2% per year, but you can claim an immediate benefit* of $15,000. How good is that?

Please note that not every purchase qualifies as an eligible investment. For example, unfortunately if you are building a website or purchasing software, you will not be able to claim the extra 50%. Check with your accountant for a complete list of eligible deductions.
